Brunch
Electronik
Since its inception in 2011, Brunch Electronik has solidified itself as one of the most popular and impactful festivals in all of Spain. Founded on the pillars of Community, Equality, and Sustainability, visionary co-founders François Jozic and Loic Le Joliff have created an environment for music unlike any other. Brunch Electronik is a Sunday music and arts festival focused on bringing in top electronic music talent and providing recreational activities to attract audiences of all ages.
“At Brunch Electronik it is clear that without commitment, there is no joy.”
Loic, initially born in France, first became interested in electronic music during his time studying in Canada. He earned a Marketing Degree from Montreal’s Business School and then worked in advertising, while also DJing and promoting on the side. Loic then made the move to Barcelona, which is where he would meet François. The two discovered they shared an interest in creating a new electronic music event format that appealed to both younger and older generations. After their first successful event together in 2011, Loic and François have continued innovating ever since. In 2023, Brunch estimates that over 4,000 families participated in their events, which is an incredible milestone in their journey of bringing electronic music to the next generation. To help achieve this goal, Brunch will also be launching Petit Brunch in 2024. This will be geared more towards younger children and features events including DJ lessons, outdoor games, and lounge areas for parents.
Brunch Electronik first began in Barcelona where the majority of their events are still held, but has since expanded to Madrid, Fuengirola, and Valencia. Outside of Spain, the group has also had success in Lisbon (PRT), Portimão (PRT), Montpellier (FRA), Lima (PER), and Santiago (CHL). As part of its pledge to environmental sustainability, the company has eliminated single-use plastics from all of its events and organized trash cleanups at each location once they have ended. After the festival season in Barcelona, owners François and Loic called on their attendees to help remove over 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) of trash from Parc Montjuic. Brunch facilitates an annual beach and mountain cleanup as well, where participants collected nearly 2 tons of waste in 2023. Other endeavors include planting 1,195 trees in deforestation zones in Spain and Portugal, and recycling cigarette butts into t-shirts for purchase and for employees.
In addition to its commitments to the environment, Brunch also strives to impact the surrounding community to which it brings events. Of their full-time employees, 40 are designated civic agents who work with representatives in each city to ensure the event upholds all community standards. Staff members working on-site for each location are always hired locally, and the company estimates they create an astounding 7,750 jobs per event. Brunch Electronik also works with approximately 30 Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) per season. Many of these assist with coordinating excess food donations from event caterers, leading to over 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) of food donations to organizations in Spain and Portugal. Others helped Brunch distribute nearly 30,000 euros to local football clubs and youth programs in 2023 alone. Lastly, all of their events feature “Safe Spaces”. These are areas stationed with psychologists and mental health professionals at the public’s disposal, further emphasizing Brunch’s commitment to the community.
While Brunch Electronik’s local and environmental initiatives have gained respect from authorities and attendees, it is their star-studded lineups with the best names in electronic music that continue to bring Brunchers back year after year. Notable artists who have performed recently include Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Marco Carola, Âme & Dixon, Adriatique, and Keinemusik. In 2023, the company tested a new three-day festival format in their hometown of Barcelona which featured more of the best in the business, with headliners like ANOTR, Carl Cox, Nina Kraviz, and Hernan Cattaneo. Despite their recent success and rapid growth, Brunch Electronik has vowed to keep ticket prices low to allow access to everyone interested in seeing what they have to offer. The combination of top-tier music, commitment to their community, and efforts to educate the next generation are all reasons why Brunch Elelctronik will continue to make a lasting impact on the global dance community.
